Apple³

An interactive sound installation that sonifies the weight, color, and texture of apples.
What is an "Apple"?
// 01
In Eden, it was a sin.
In mythology, desire.
In the Nordic world, eternity.
In fairy tales, poison.
In festivals, prayer.
A single fruit carries countless stories.
Apple³
// 02
This work is an interactive sound installation that translates the physical properties of apples into sound. Through interaction, apples become active agents within the system, generating sonic responses based on their material presence rather than predefined symbolic meanings.
Implementation
// 03
Three cameras observe each apple from different angles, capturing distinct surface regions.
By enhancing contrast, the system extracts lenticel patterns and translates them into MIDI notes within a C Lydian scale, emphasizing melodic openness rather than tonal closure.
The redness of the apple modulates timbral brightness, while a weight sensor beneath the fruit measures its mass and uses this value to select different MIDI instruments.
Through this layered mapping process, the apple shifts from a visual object to a sounding body, revealing patterns embedded in its form, color, and weight.
Visual to Audio to Visual
// 04
Apple³ follows a cycle of seeing, listening, and seeing again.
As the apple passes through visual, sonic, and visual states, its form is not fixed but continually re-formed through perception. The work dwells in this interval, where sensation folds back onto itself and meaning remains open.
